I Do Cool Things That I Didn’t Know I Could Do is the eighth chapter of The Gift of a Best Friend. It was first published on June 14, 2016.
Jasmine really loves music. Maybe a little too much. I guess that isn’t a surprise since her mom is a singer. But whenever she does something, she insists that I do it with her too, like play the piano or dance.
Jasmine’s mom, Sarah, teaches me how to play. And, I’ll admit, I like to play it. She’s even taught me to play a few of her songs. But then Jasmine wants to teach me how to dance, which she really loves, and I don’t like it.
I tried to do what she told me at first, but it was ridiculous and it made me wonder if people really did this. Well, Jasmine does, and she’s weird.
“How flexible are you?” Jasmine asked me.
“What?” I asked.
“How well can you bend?”
“What do you mean?”
“Can you do this?”
She grabbed her right foot and lifted it straight above her head. It really surprised me.
“How can you do that?” I asked in awe.
“Can you do this?” she asked.
I shook my head. “No.”
I did, but immediately fell down.
“You need to be more flexible,” Jasmine said.
“How?” I asked.
“By doing gymnastics.”
“Gymnastics. It’s really cool. Come with me the next time I go.”
“I don’t know.”
I hate it when she does that.
“I have to ask my dad,” I said.
Jasmine’s parents offered to pay for me to do gymnastics with Jasmine, so my dad let me go with her.
I didn’t like it at first, but Jasmine helped me through it. After going there for a while, I was able to lift my leg over my head without falling. I couldn’t believe it. I learned more about gymnastics and that I could learn to do flips on balance beams and do competitions, but I had to wait until I was older.
I, honestly, couldn’t wait until I was. But Jasmine really wanted me to dance with her. I do sometimes, just to be nice, but I don’t like it that much.
Jasmine’s grandmother, Raylee, wanted to teach her how to use and fight with a sword. She wanted to teach me too, so that we can protect ourselves, even though she doesn’t know I already can.
Our swords were a foot long and steel and not too heavy for us. We chose how we wanted to carry our sheaths for them. Jasmine wanted hers to be like how her other grandma carries her sword, which was across her back.
I chose my side, but then realized that Jasmine had the right idea. Having your sword’s sheath across your back is much less annoying than when it’s on your side.
Nick taught us how to fight with a sword along with Raylee since he always seems to be near her. The animals too.
It was a while before they let Jasmine and I fight each other, but it wasn’t good because Jasmine couldn’t block my attacks. Mostly because she didn’t know how to yet. I could do it, though I didn’t know how.
Then Jasmine took me to her other grandparents house and tried to teach me how to fly the griffin, with her grandparents permission and supervision, of course.
The fact that she knew how to fly it at just five years old surprised me. I tried to fly it myself, which was kind of easy, but learning all of the controls and remembering which button did what was hard, even for Jasmine. For now, all we could do was fly and land it.
Jasmine’s grandparents weren’t going to let her fly the airship until she was much older. Unless her dad lets her behind their backs, which he apparently does sometimes. So we just flew on Zon for a while, then we went home.
But out of all of that, my favorite thing was learning how to use a sword. It felt like something I should do.
Jasmine’s favorite was everything. She’s a weird and crazy girl.
And, for some reason, I liked her because of that.
Another short chapter. It's really hard to come up with ideas for them while they're still five-years-old, and I don't really remember anything for myself when I was five, so it's a struggle. But I promise that as they get older the longer the chapters will be. I want to show a bit of their cuteness while they still have it.
