I Meet My New Brothers and Sisters is the twenty-fifth chapter of The Gift of a Best Friend. It was first published on September 30, 2016.
I liked Camp Half-Blood. It’s really cool and big. Just how I like it.
I also liked Athena’s cabin, especially since I get to be with Annabeth. I liked Cassandra too, and Annabeth’s other siblings. Cassandra’s kind of mean, but she’s cool. Toothless liked camp too.
“Is camp this fun all the time?” I asked Cassandra.
“No,” she replied. “It’s only like this during the summer time. From fall all the way until the next summer, it’s mostly quiet and empty.”
“Most demigods come to camp only during the summer time, like most other demigods. I’m the only child of Athena that stays year-round.”
“Why?” Annabeth asked.
“There’s a few reasons why demigods stay year-round. One, they don’t have a place to go home to. But if they do, and chose to stay at camp, it’s usually because it’s either too dangerous for them to go home because they keep being attacked by monsters, or they don’t like who they have to go home to. Like, say, your mortal parent.”
“Do you have a home?”
“Yes, I have a home. But it’s in Los Angeles with my dad, and it’s a terrible place for demigods to live, especially for ones my age.”
“Why?” I asked.
“Because there are a lot of monsters there. Too many for even me to handle. And I don’t want to put my dad in danger. So I stay here.”
“Do you like your daddy?”
Cassandra nodded. “Yes, I do. I miss him too. We talk a couple times a week through Iris-messages.”
“Iris-messages?” Annabeth asked.
“Yes. I’ll teach you two about those and how to use them. But, anyway, what about you two? Do you like your daddies?”
“I love mine,” I replied. “And my mommy too.”
“Do you have any brothers or sisters?” Cassandra asked.
I nodded. “I have a baby brother, and his name is Jonathan.”
“That’s nice. What about you, Annabeth?”
I looked at her.
She looked really sad, and I knew why.
“My family hates me,” Annabeth said. “I ran away.”
“Oh,” Cassandra replied, sounding just as sad. “I’m sorry. But I guess that explains why you’re here as young as you are. Most demigods don’t come to camp until they’re teenagers. But I’m your new family, and I can assure you that I won’t hurt you.”
Annabeth smiled. “Thank you.”
I jumped onto Annabeth’s bed and gave her a hug. She didn’t like it, but she took it.
“How are my little girls doing?” Luke asked, peeking into our cabin.
We jumped off the bed and ran to him.
“We’re doing great,” I told him.
“That’s good,” he replied.
He came into the cabin, and I noticed that his hands were behind his back.
Annabeth noticed too. “What’s behind your back?”
Luke kneeled down in front of us. “I got you two something from the camp store.”
“What?” I asked.
He pulled out two stuffed animals from behind his back, a teddy bear and a wolf, and gave one of them to Annabeth and the other to me.
“Doggy!” I said.
I grabbed the wolf from him and hugged it.
Toothless didn’t like it. Is that a real dog?.
“Umm, I don’t think so,” I replied. “It doesn’t feel real to me. Was this a real doggy, Luke?”
“I don’t think so,” he replied.
“It’s not, Toothless.”
Keep it away from me, he said.
“Ok. I’ll try.”
He flew over to my bed and landed on my pillow.
“Of course, you wouldn’t tell her if it was real before,” I heard Cassandra mutter.
Luke glared at her.
Annabeth hugged her teddy bear. “Thank you, Luke.”
“Yeah,” I agreed.
“You’re welcome,” he said. “I thought I’d give you two a cabin-warming gift. And since you two are still little, I thought you might still like stuffed animals.”
“Did you steal those?” Cassandra asked.
Luke smiled in a weird way. “Maybe.”
Cassandra rolled her eyes. “Typical son of Hermes.”
“I got you one too.”
He pulled out an owl from behind him and gave it to her.
Cassandra looked surprised and took it from him, looking a little red. “Thank you.”
“That’s Athena’s sacred animal, right?” Luke asked.
“Yes. Why did you give it to me?”
“It’s a thank-you present for watching out for Annabeth and Jasmine.”
“Oh. Well, you’re welcome. And thank you again for it.”
“You’re welcome. And you’re blushing.”
“I am not!”
“Yes, you are.”
“Oh . . . get out of my cabin.”
Luke laughed. Annabeth and I did too.
“Luke?” a woman’s voice called.
“Over here,” he called back outside the cabin.
It was my grandma. Mommy, Daddy, Johnathan, Nick, Pikachu, and the animals were with her.
I ran to them and gave them all hugs.
“How’d you find us?” Luke asked.
“The same as always,” Grandma replied. “We went to the last place we saw each other, the animals got your scent, and we followed it all the way here.”
“Yeah, uh, what is this place, exactly?” Mommy asked.
Luke explained it all to them. How Camp Half-Blood is a safe place for demigods, then he told them about Cassandra and how she’s Annabeth’s sister.
“Hello,” she told them all. “I’ve heard a lot about you guys. I’ve even done some research.
“Hi,” Mommy said. “Are you a fan?”
“Of your music? I’ve heard some of your songs. They’re good. But I really like how Raylee protects the country from crime, and gives justice to those that the Justice system does not give justice to when they deserve it.”
Grandma smiled. “Thank you. But not many people like me for that.”
“But you don’t care.”
“So,” Daddy said. “You guys have a god here.”
“Yes,” Annabeth replied.
“He’s mean,” I said.
“Careful, Jasmine,” Cassandra warned, her eyes wide. “The gods don’t take criticism lightly. If you say stuff like that about them, they’ll know it and blast you with lightning.”
“They better not,” Mommy said. “Unless they want to deal with my wrath.”
“Yeah,” Grandma agreed. “But how is he mean to you?”
“He says our names wrong,” I replied. “He calls me Janine. Luke, Lucas. And Annabeth, Annie Bell. I don’t like that.”
“No one does,” Cassandra said. “He says everyone’s name wrong. He calls me Cassidy.”
“He’s too lazy to remember anyone’s name,” Luke said.
Cassandra smiled. “Probably.”
“Ok,” Mommy said. Then she looked at me and Annabeth. “But other than that, you two like it here?”
We both nodded. “Yeah.”
“Ok.” She looked back at Cassandra and Luke. “I trust that you two will watch out for them and keep them safe?”
They nodded. “Yes.”
“I hope you do. You too, Toothless.”
I will, he replied.
“That’s cute,” Grandma said. “But where’s Thalia?”
Annabeth, Luke, Toothless, and I became sad at the memory.
“Umm, follow me and I’ll tell you what happened,” Luke said.
“Uh, ok,” Grandma said.
She, Luke, Nick, Pikachu, and the animals left the cabin to talk. Toothless went with them too for some reason.
I showed Mommy, Daddy, and Johnathan around camp.
“Those demigods are quite strong,” Mommy said.
“How do you mean?” Daddy asked.
“I can feel strong power radiating from them all. But, surprisingly, out of all of them, the power radiating from Annabeth is stronger than anyone else’s.”
Mommy shook her head. “I don’t know. I mean, the power radiating from Jasmine and Johnathan is stronger than yours.”
Daddy looked at me, then smiled. “Well, there’s no one else I’d much rather have be stronger than me than my own children.”
“Yeah,” Mommy agreed. “But they’ll become even stronger when their powers activate.”
When my powers activate, I thought.
When my powers activate, I’ll be able to feel how strong everyone’s powers are and compare them. Even my own.
But when will my powers activate?
Not for a while, girl.
I hope you guys reading this enjoyed the chapter. I want to let you all know that I may not be updating next Friday. As you all probably know, The Hammer of Thor is coming out on Tuesday! I'm going to get it then and binge read it until I'm done, which will hopefully be done in two-three days, but I think next week is going to be quite busy for me. I hope you guys are able to get the book and read it too! Enjoy!
